I've attended the Krewe of Orion Mardi Gras ball for coronation in 2006 and 2007 and had a great time. Everyone gets all dressed up to see the introduction of each years royal court. There is a band, drinking and dancing. Tickets were less than $100 per person.
The parade runs in downtown Baton Rouge usually in Mid February a couple of weeks after the coronation ball. There are around 20 big nice floats and it's got all the flair of New Orleans Mardi Gras. Pictures below.
The parade seems to be short and not last very long but it's just because Baton Rouge isn't as crowded as New Orleans. The parade runs a long route and you can easily walk to see it twice.
One of the great things about Saturday parades like Orion is that downtown Baton Rouge establishments have alot more going on because of the extra people. Josh Garrett & The Bottom line played during the day at the Roux house on Third street. It was great fun.
I would recommend you get down to downtown early and plan on making a day out of things because they close off some of the streets during parades. We parked in the Belle of Baton Rouge casino parking lot and spent much of our day either in the casino, the atrium or on Third street. There were lots of other people and good fun and conversation.
I suggest people get a hotel in downtown Baton Rouge and stay for the weekend if possible.
